Wait, a sugar fire? Like you actually set sugar on fire and it was hot enough to melt a spatula? That's wild, I didn't even know sugar could get that hot. Most people just end up with a burnt mess on the pan, but you melted kitchen tools. Was this a gas stove situation or did you just crank a burner to max?

Oh absolutely, "a burnt mess on the pan" is exactly how it usually goes, but this was a whole different level. I had a similar experience a few years back when I was trying to make caramel from scratch for a pie. I got distracted by the phone and next thing I know, the sugar was bubbling and smoking like mad. I grabbed my old rubber spatula to stir it, and it literally started to melt and drip into the pan. The heat was so intense it warped the handle of the spatula beyond recognition. I had to throw the whole pan and the spatula in the trash because the sugar had basically turned into a rock hard, blackened puck that was fused to the metal. It was a gas stove, and I think I had it on high the whole time, which I learned the hard way is a recipe for disaster with sugar.
