My old boss in Omaha dropped one line about overtime that made me rethink 2 years of my life
Ran into my old boss Dave at a gas station off 72nd in Omaha last Saturday, hadn't seen him since I quit in 2021. He said he never once looked at who worked the extra hours when he handed out promotions, he just handed it to whoever he trusted to not screw up the easy stuff. I spent 2 years picking up every Saturday shift thinking it would get me somewhere. Turns out showing up on time and not causing problems would have done more, so now I want to know if anyone else got played by the same idea that hours equal respect.
Man, that line from Dave hits hard. I went through the same thing at a warehouse gig where I thought staying late every night would get me moved up, but the guy who got the supervisor spot was the one who never missed a shift and kept his area clean. What actually worked for me was picking one thing the boss hated dealing with and just owning it, for me it was the messy paperwork at close, and after a few months he started asking me to train new hires. Turns out being the guy who makes the boss's day easier beats being the guy who clocks the most hours.
