Wasted $150 on a premium VPN service before realizing free options work fine for basic browsing

I paid for a full year upfront after seeing an ad about security risks, but then found out my neighbor uses a free one with no issues, has anyone else fallen for the paid hype?

Wait, they actually log your data and sell it? I thought free meant free.

A friend in my cybersecurity class told me most free VPNs just log your data and sell it to advertisers, so you're not really getting privacy for free. I read a report from a tech site that found paid ones like Mullvad and Proton actually don't keep logs, while free ones often do. Did you check the privacy policy on your neighbor's free VPN before switching?
