Picked up a bad habit from a rushed job at a dental office last Tuesday

I was swapping out a dead power supply on their server and got sloppy with cable routing since they were breathing down my neck about being fast. Now I keep finding myself skipping zip ties on other jobs just to save 5 minutes. Anyone else pick up shortcuts they regret from a stressful site?

My buddy picked up this exact bad habit from a rushed server migration at a school. He skipped zip ties on their whole network rack to save time, and two weeks later a cable got snagged by a janitor's vacuum. Cost him a full Saturday to re-run everything AND drive back out there (his words: "never again").

Was the janitor even trained to watch out for loose cables?

Never again" until the next time the client is rushing you. Your buddy's mistake wasn't skipping zip ties, it was not warning the janitor or the school about the loose cables. A five second heads up to the custodian would have saved his Saturday. Sometimes you gotta read the room and know when a shortcut actually works. If the cables are up high and out of vacuum range, who cares about zip ties? That extra 5 minutes per rack adds up fast when you're doing 4 racks in a day.
