My buddy swore by a $20 USB-C dock for diagnosing power issues, but it fried a client's motherboard
I mean, it worked fine on three other laptops, but the fourth one just smoked. Anyone got a reliable dock brand they actually trust?

Be a tax on being careful" is a good way to put it, but I gotta call out one thing. The HDMI cable thing isn't really the same because with USB-C there's a real chance of frying the port if the wiring is wrong. A cheap HDMI cable just gives you a bad picture or no signal at all, not a toasted motherboard. The problem with those $20 docks is they sometimes skip the safety chips that regulate power draw. So you're not just risking a dead cable, you're risking the whole laptop. It's honestly terrifying how one wrong pin can kill a $1000 board.

Totally get that, it's like the generic batteries that leak in your remote. Feels like every cheap connector is a little gamble you don't know you're taking.

See this happen with all kinds of cheap adapters. That bargain HDMI cable works until your monitor flickers out. The off-brand phone charger stops fast charging after a month. We chase the deal, but the part that connects two expensive things is where they always save a penny. It's a tax on being careful.
