I thought those $15 anti-static mats were just a gimmick until a motherboard fried on my bench
I was working on a custom build for a client in Tampa, and I figured my usual routine of touching the case was good enough. After I zapped a perfectly good board (which cost me $200 out of pocket, by the way), I finally caved and bought one. Has anyone else had a specific part die on them that finally made you take static seriously?

Yeah, that "touching the case" method is such a trap. I did the same thing for years, thinking I was grounded enough. My wake-up call was a graphics card, just a tiny zap on a corner and the display ports were dead. It's wild how something you can't even feel can kill a part that costs more than a week's groceries. Now the mat feels cheap compared to the peace of mind, you know?

Honestly @kim373, calling it a trap feels a bit much. I've built a few PCs just touching the case first and never had a part die on me. It seems like a worst case scenario thing that gets talked up a lot online. Sure, it can happen, but how often is it really the static and not just a bad part? I'll keep doing it my way until I actually have a problem.

My old apartment had wall to wall carpet that was basically a static factory. I'd shuffle over to my PC, touch the case, and still managed to fry a RAM stick. The real kicker was the humidity, or lack of it. Dry winter air made it a gamble every time I went near the motherboard. That's when I finally caved and got a proper strap that clips to the radiator pipe.
