I swore I'd never go digital for my comics... then my basement flooded

I was in my basement in Cincinnati last spring, sorting through my long boxes from the 90s. A pipe burst overnight and soaked about 300 books, including my full run of 'The Maxx'. I spent a week trying to dry them out, but the damage was done. That convinced me to finally try a digital service. I signed up for a subscription and now I can read those same stories on my tablet, no risk of water damage. Has anyone else been forced to switch formats after a disaster like that?

Disagree about the smell. My digital copies don't get that weird basement mildew stink.

Oh man, I totally get what you're saying about digital copies being clean! There's definitely something nice about not having that musty smell that old paperbacks get after a few years in a damp box. But for me, the smell is part of the charm, even if it's a little weird. I used to have a copy of Dune that smelled like my grandpa's basement and it just felt right, you know?

Oof, that's a brutal way to learn that lesson. Nature really hates collecting things, doesn't it? At least you can still read the stories, even if the smell of old paper is gone.
