My cousin said something about his morning cup that got me thinking

We were at a family thing last Sunday and he was making a pot. He just looked at me and said, 'You know, I don't even really like the taste anymore. I just need the buzz to start my day.' That hit me kind of hard. I've been there, just gulping down whatever's in the pot without even thinking about it. It made me stop and ask myself if I was just drinking it out of habit too. I used to get excited about trying a new bag from a local roaster, but lately it's just been the same old can from the store. I think I lost the 'enthusiast' part somewhere along the way. Has anyone else ever felt like they were just going through the motions with their coffee?

Read an article that called it "utility coffee." Totally get that feeling of just needing the fuel.

My dad used to keep a crusty thermos of black coffee in his workshop. It would sit there all day, getting reheated on a hot plate until it was basically tar. He'd take a gulp between saw cuts, not even tasting it. I mean, that stuff wasn't for enjoying, it was just part of the machine, like grease for the gears. It's the same with those giant pots at all-night diners or the free stuff at the car dealership waiting room. It's not a drink, it's just a battery charge in a cup.

Remember my friend Dan chugging cold gas station coffee straight from the pot at 5 AM. He said it tasted like burnt rubber and regret, but his truck was loaded and the job site was two hours away. That's the purest form of utility coffee I've ever seen, no ceremony at all. It was just about getting the chemical job done so he could keep his hands steady on the wheel. Sometimes coffee isn't a drink, it's just a tool you use to get from one part of the day to the next.
