French press sludge is driving me nuts

I've had the same press for ages and it was fine. Now every brew ends up with gritty bits at the bottom. Did I get a bad batch of beans or is my technique off?

Chewing coffee used to sound weird to me but honestly @the_jennifer you might be onto something. I mean maybe the texture is part of the whole thing.
