Appreciation post: breaking a rule in a coding bootcamp

I was in a 12 week bootcamp in Denver, and everyone kept saying you had to memorize syntax cold before moving on. During week 5, I spent an entire weekend trying to force pointers into my brain, got nothing done on my project, and bombed the Monday code review. I stopped memorizing and started building, even if my code was ugly, and my instructor actually said 'that's how you learn' after I showed a working but messy app. Anyone else get told to memorize first but found building broken stuff was better?

Yeah pointers are pretty much useless in most modern languages anyway.

Ugh totally agree. Wasted so much time on them in school and never use them now.
