Switched to a reusable coffee filter after finding 300 K-Cups in a landfill

I was dumping trash at the county dump near Springfield last month and saw this whole pile of used K-Cups just sitting in a row. Counted like 300 of them in one spot, all non recyclable plastic. Made me look up how many end up in landfills every year and it's insane. Switched to a stainless steel mesh filter for my Mr. Coffee and it works fine. Anyone else ditch single serve pods for a more permanent setup?

Yeah I had the same wakeup call a couple years back when I helped a buddy clean out his garage and found like a hundred k-cups stuffed in a box he forgot about. The mesh filter is the way to go, just rinse it out and you're good for years. I even started composting the grounds after that, they break down fast in the garden. The only thing I miss is the convenience on mornings I'm running late, but I just prefill the filter the night before and it takes ten seconds.

Read that coffee grounds help with soil aeration too.

Have you tried tossing them in the freezer first? I keep a bag of used grounds in my freezer to cut down on the smell, then I just sprinkle them around my tomato plants every couple weeks.
