Remember when everyone said a heat pump wouldn't work in a cold climate like mine?

About five years ago, our old gas furnace was on its last legs. We had to choose between replacing it with a new, more efficient gas model or going for a whole-home heat pump system. The gas furnace was the safe, known option everyone in our town in upstate New York used. The heat pump was this new thing that felt like a gamble, especially with our winters. We decided to take the chance and got the heat pump installed in the fall of 2019. Honestly, I was nervous the first time the temperature dropped below 20 degrees. But it worked perfectly, and our heating bill dropped by almost 30% that first winter. It's been running strong ever since, even through some nasty cold snaps. It's funny how the 'weird' choice back then is just normal now. Has anyone else made a big switch like that and been surprised by how well it worked out?

Did you get any pushback from neighbors or the HVAC guys when you picked the heat pump?

Old gas still cranks heat when those things freeze up.
