Overheard a guy at the cafe say solar panels are a scam

Some dude was telling his friend that solar panels don't actually help the climate because making them uses too much energy. I looked it up later and found out they pay back that energy in about 2 years, then run clean for 20 more. Anyone else tired of fighting these myths?

Yeah I remember reading something from a university study that said the energy payback time on most residential panels is actually closer to 18 months now, not even 2 years. That guy probably just heard one bad take online and ran with it. It's frustrating because the facts are out there if people actually looked. The whole "solar is a scam" thing is usually just someone repeating something they heard without checking.

My friend Mark actually fell for that line a few years ago... his neighbor kept going on about how solar was a waste of money so Mark believed him and passed on a deal that would've cut his electric bill by half. Then his other neighbor got panels installed and showed him the actual savings last summer... Mark still brings it up every time we talk about energy stuff, kicking himself. Now he's trying to get on a community solar program instead.
