My neighbor laughed at my rain barrel until the water bill came
Last July we had that heat wave where the city put watering restrictions on. I spent $180 on a 50 gallon barrel off Craigslist and set it under my downspout. My neighbor Mike watched me haul it around and joked that I was cosplaying as a homesteader. Two weeks later his lawn was brown and dead while mine stayed green. He asked how much I paid for the water and I told him zero, it was all runoff. Has anyone else had people mock their setup until the savings got real?

My uncle did the same thing with a rain barrel about ten years back, only his neighbor called the city on him thinking it was against some code. Turns out it was totally legal and the inspector ended up asking him where he got the barrel because his own water bill was killing him. The funny part was the neighbor who snitched ended up getting a barrel too once he saw the numbers. Mike will probably come around asking for the Craigslist link by August. People laugh at stuff that saves money right up until they're the ones paying for it.
