My DIY rainwater barrel project made me rethink all my water habits

I put together a barrel to collect rain for my garden. It started as a way to pay less for water. Soon I noticed my tap water use went down a lot. I realized little steps can make a big difference. Now I'm finding more spots to reduce waste.

That point about little steps making a big difference really hits home. I set up a shower bucket to catch cold water before it heats up for my plants. It cut my bill and made me hunt for more easy wins like that.

Put a bucket in the shower like Logan said, it seriously works so well. I use the leftover water for my houseplants and a small patch of herbs on the balcony. It makes you see water totally differently, like it's a resource you can actually move around. I even got one of those sink aerators and it feels like a game to see how low I can get the meter reading. You start noticing every single drip and feel weirdly pumped when you fix it.

Ever notice how much water just gets wasted waiting for the shower to heat up? I started timing my showers after installing a low-flow head, and it was crazy how many extra gallons I was using without even thinking. That little change made me super aware of all the hidden water use around the house, like running the tap while brushing my teeth. It's wild how one fix can flip a switch in your brain. Now I catch myself being weirdly proud of turning the sink off fast.
