Rant: My "free" museum day cost me $60 in parking and snacks
Went to the city art museum last Saturday because they advertise free admission the first weekend of every month. What nobody tells you is the garage across the street charges $28 flat rate, and once you're inside they herd you past a $12 café and a gift shop with $8 keychains. I did the math after leaving, two of us spent more than a movie ticket costs. Checked the museum's website later and buried in fine print it says "suggested donation" and "paid events excluded," plus the garage is privately owned so they get away with it. Anyone else get tricked by these "free" cultural days in bigger cities like Chicago or Seattle?

Parking downtown anywhere costs an arm and a leg, museum or not. You would have paid that same 28 bucks to park for a ballgame or a dinner out, so pinning it on the free museum day is a stretch. The snacks are on you too, nobody made you buy the 12 dollar sandwich when you could have eaten before you went. Free admission means free admission, not free parking and free food, and every museum I have ever been to has a suggested donation box sitting right there in plain sight. You still got into the museum for nothing, which is more than you can say for most things in a big city. Doing the math after the fact and calling it a trick is a little dramatic when the garage sign was probably right there when you pulled in.
