Unpopular opinion: My basement theater seats are just stacked carpet pads.

I was tired of buying furniture, so I layered extra pads for friends to sit on during movie night. They sunk in so deep we had to help each other up, laughing the whole time.

My buddy Mark tried the same carpet pad stack in his garage for football Sundays. He didn't use any plywood at first, so after a few hours his whole friend group was wedged in a deep, fluffy pit. Getting out was a whole workout, with a lot of confused grunting and lost shoes. He finally caved and got those plywood sheets cut at the hardware store (they did it for free, which was nice). Once the boards were under the pads, the sinking stopped completely and everyone could actually stand up after the game. Now he swears by that setup, saying the plywood turns a funny mess into real seating.

Ever tried putting plywood under them? It stops the sinking and is way more stable. Home stores will even cut it to size for you.

Is the sinking really that big of a deal? Cushions are kind of meant to give a little, and that soft pit sounds half the fun. Going full plywood just turns it into a bench, which defeats the whole point.
