That guy from the big box store said stiff-backed carpet is always better

Heard a salesman tell a customer that stiff-backed carpet lasts longer, but I've pulled up too many of those that cracked after 5 years in a Denver basement. Has anyone else seen that foam backing fail way before the face fibers wear out?

Oh man, I've pulled up so many of those stiff backings that just disintegrated.

Used to be a believer in that stiff-backed stuff myself, figured more structure meant more durability. But after helping a friend pull up the same foam-backed carpet in his basement, it was basically crumbling like old cheese while the carpet itself still looked fine. Your mileage may vary depending on climate, but I've seen way too many of those stiff backings turn to powder.

Man, you're making me want to go check my own basement carpet now and see if it's turning into dust too. I swear, I've pulled up enough of that stuff to build a small landfill at this point. It's like the backing has a built-in expiration date, but nobody tells you about it until you're already knee-deep in crumbly foam. Guess that's what I get for trusting the "it's better" sales pitch.
