Rant: A weird floor dip in a 1950s house cost me a whole extra day

I had a job last week in a 1950s ranch house, putting down a basic plush carpet. The subfloor looked flat enough at a glance, so I just started rolling out the pad. Big mistake. About halfway across the main room, I hit this soft spot, a dip about three feet wide that you couldn't see but you could sure feel. The whole area had a bounce to it. I had to pull everything back up, which meant taking out all the staples I'd just put in. The fix was adding a layer of plywood over the old planks just in that one spot, then feathering it out with leveling compound. What should have been a one day install turned into two full days because I didn't check close enough with a long level first. Ever run into a hidden floor problem that ate up your schedule?

Those old plank subfloors are sneaky like that. A long level is your best friend for sure.

Absolutely! Learned that the hard way on my last reno. That long level saved me from a wobbly floor disaster.
