Hot take: Getting my cut waste under control felt like a big win

I always just estimated extra material and it was either a huge waste or I came up short. Finally kept a simple tally on my phone for a fence job, and now I order just right.

Yeah, that 'big win' feeling you mentioned is so true. I mean, I was in the same boat always adding way too much extra just to be safe. Maybe it's just me but I started writing down every cut for a shed build last year, just on my phone notes. It felt kinda silly at first but man, what a difference. I stopped ending up with those random leftover pieces that are too small to use. Now I order way closer to what I actually need and it saves a bunch of cash. Idk, it's such a simple fix but it really changes how you feel about a job.

I read a carpentry blog that said the real pros measure twice so they only cut once. It keeps the scrap pile way down.

That careful planning you mentioned really does apply to so much more than just wood.
