Why everyone keeps telling new workers to 'follow your passion' is dead wrong

I've been in IT support for 12 years now, and I keep seeing people give advice that passion will fix everything. Last month a coworker told her nephew to just do what he loves and money will follow. But I started out loving gaming and ended up hating my help desk job because nobody talks about the boring parts. Real career growth comes from building skills in something useful, not chasing a dream until you burn out. Has anyone else found that practical skills beat passion in the long run?

Can any of these passion pushers actually define what they mean by passion? Because the last time I checked, loving video games doesn't teach you how to deal with someone yelling at you over a printer that's been unplugged for six hours. Most people's passions don't come with a built-in career path unless you count things like making spreadsheets or filing paperwork as dream jobs. The real trick is finding something you can tolerate doing 40 hours a week that pays your bills, not waiting for your hobbies to magically turn into a paycheck.

The whole tolerate a job just to pay bills thing is what keeps people miserable and stuck forever. Passions aren't just about video games and hobbies, they're about the stuff that makes you lose track of time and actually want to get better at it. Someone who loves spreadsheets and filing can absolutely turn that into a career in data or admin work, and they'll be way happier than someone who just grinds through the day waiting for 5pm. Dealing with angry customers over a printer isn't a life skill you need to build in a passion career anyway, you just set boundaries and let people be mad. The real trick is finding work that uses your natural energy instead of fighting against it every single day. Ignoring what actually lights you up is exactly how people end up burned out and wondering why they dread Sunday night so bad.
