Showerthought: I saw a sign at a Denver coffee shop hiring baristas for $18 an hour plus tips...
It made me think about the whole 'take a lower paying job for experience' debate. On one side, you could argue that $18 an hour in a busy shop is solid money right now, maybe better than some entry level office gigs. But on the other side, does that kind of job really build skills for a long term career path, or is it just a paycheck? I'm curious if people think it's smarter to chase the higher immediate pay or stick with a lower salary in a field you actually want to grow in. What's the better move for someone just starting out?

Honestly used to believe you should always take the lower paying "career" job. That coffee shop pay actually seems like a decent way to avoid debt while you figure things out, doesn't it?

It's part of that weird pressure to always be building your "personal brand" even when you're broke. We're told to trade real money for fake prestige, like a good resume line is more valuable than being able to pay your electric bill. The whole system banks on young people being desperate enough to accept that trade. Seeing more folks choose the coffee shop paycheck feels like a small, quiet rebellion against it.

Remember when they told us to suffer through unpaid internships for the "experience"? I took one that paid in stale bagels and a line on my resume. Meanwhile my friend was pulling actual money from her cafe shifts and still had time to apply for real jobs. Guess who had to borrow rent money from their parents?
