Rant: I was at a big tech conference in Austin and the push for 'hustle culture' felt totally wrong

Was it that weird mix of people acting like they never sleep, but also trying to sell you a meditation app? I see it everywhere now, even at my kid's school fundraiser. They're calling volunteering a "networking opportunity" and it just feels like we can't do anything just to be kind anymore.

Yeah exactly that. It's like every single part of life has to be turned into some kind of transaction now. Even just helping out at a bake sale or a car wash can't just be about helping the kids, it's got to be this whole thing about your LinkedIn profile or whatever. I miss when people did nice things and then just went home and watched TV without trying to monetize it. It's exhausting to live in a world where even kindness needs a purpose.

the_xena makes a good point that it's mostly about selling you something, but i wonder how much of it is also about people who actually believe the hype. like what do the true believers get out of it when they realize they're just burning themselves out for a conference badge and a free tote bag? i'm asking because i had a buddy who went all in on that stuff and he ended up quitting his job to start a dropshipping biz that tanked in three months. does anybody actually come out ahead in the long run or is it just a treadmill that looks shiny from the outside?
