Overheard my boss say 'we don't do raises here' to a new hire and it hit different
I was grabbing coffee in the break room last week and my manager told a junior dev straight up that annual raises aren't a thing at our company. I've been here 2 years and never got a formal raise either, just a tiny bonus once. Has anyone else had luck negotiating a raise at a place that's openly anti-raise?

It helps to remember that 'we don't do raises' usually means no annual cost-of-living increases, but it might not mean you can't get a promotion with a pay bump. A better approach is to focus on a new title and expanded duties, then negotiate the salary for that new role. That way you aren't asking for a raise under the same job description, you're asking for a new position. Companies that refuse basic raises also have a history of losing good people that way, so make sure you have your resume ready before you bring it up.

My last job pulled the EXACT same "we don't do raises" line. I asked for a Senior title with new responsibilities and they still said no. So I updated my resume, found a competitor paying 20 percent more for the SAME work, and left. They lost two other people in my department that month too. Companies that stubborn about raises usually end up with a revolving door and a lot of stressed out employees.

Wait, did they actually say "Senior" title was a no-go too? That seems like a no-brainer for them to keep you happy... companies like that drive me nuts, they'd rather lose good people than give a little ground.
