My old boss said 'never take a counteroffer' but my friend just did and got a huge raise

I was having coffee with a friend last week, and she told me she got a job offer from another company for 15% more pay. When she told her current boss, they matched it and gave her a better title on the spot. She's staying. This really threw me because my first manager in tech always drilled into me that accepting a counteroffer is career suicide. He said it shows you're already checked out and they'll just replace you later. But my friend seems happy and secure. It made me think: is that old rule always true, or is it different now? Maybe it depends on why you were looking. If it's only about money, a counter could work. But if you hate the work, more cash won't fix that. I'm curious what others think based on their own jobs. Have you taken a counteroffer, and how did it turn out a year later?

My old company matched an offer and it worked out fine. They knew I was serious about leaving and actually fixed the problems I had. A year later I got another promotion.

Counteroffers just delay the inevitable exit.

Yeah, until they start looking for your cheaper replacement next week. Good luck with that.
