Cold called my way into a job in 1998, tried it again last month and wow
Back in the late 90s I was fresh out of community college in Boise and just called random engineering firms asking for informational chats. Got three interviews that way and one offer. Last month I told my nephew to try the same thing, and he got ghosted by every single place he reached out to. One receptionist even laughed and said "we only take applications through the portal." Maybe the old method just doesn't work anymore, or maybe it depends on the industry. Has anyone else seen cold outreach totally die off, or did I just get lucky back then?
Used to roll my eyes at the whole just call them up thing and figured it was dead. Tried it myself last year and yeah, portals or nothing now, cold calls get you nowhere. Guess the old way only worked because nobody had a website to hide behind back then.
