My buddy's canceling made me question everything I believed about online justice.
Now I warn others: before you pile on, ask yourself if the punishment fits the crime, you know?

Man, that really hits home. @danielb43 has a point about words having weight, but the reaction often goes way too far (like, career-ending over a bad joke). It just feels so out of balance sometimes.

People get destroyed for a rude comment from 2012 or a bad joke. It's just a tweet, not a crime. The whole internet acts like someone made a death threat when they just said something dumb. The punishment never fits the crime, it's always a total life wrecking over nothing. We treat mild awkwardness like it's pure evil.

Okay, but let's not pretend those old jokes don't still hurt people today. When someone puts hateful stuff online, it doesn't just disappear because years passed. @adam517, do you think the person on the receiving end just forgets about it? If we let everyone off the hook for past mess ups, what does that say about what we value? Sometimes facing real results is the only way folks learn their words have real weight.
