My old 2-person tent from 2011 finally gave up last weekend
Took it out to Lost Maples State Park last weekend and the rainfly just shredded during a storm around 3am. Bought that thing for 60 bucks at a garage sale 3 years ago, it had already seen better days. I patched it like 5 times with duct tape. Sitting there soaked at 4am, I was thinking about how gear used to last forever. My dad still has a tent from the 80s that works fine. Now everything feels disposable. I'm looking at getting a new one but I don't want to drop 300 on something that'll fall apart in 5 years. Anyone else noticing newer gear just doesn't hold up like the old stuff?

...and honestly the duct tape was probably doing more work than the actual seams at that point. I had a beater tent from the 90s that survived a flash flood in Colorado, meanwhile my buddy bought a brand new one last year and the poles bent on the second trip. Makes you wonder if they're secretly making the cheap stuff worse on purpose so you upgrade faster.
