Rant: Everyone says to never touch the shutter curtain on a Leica M3, but I had to
I was in my shop in Denver last fall, and a customer's M3 had a shutter that was dragging at 1/1000th. The usual advice is to send it out, but I carefully used a tiny drop of naphtha on a cotton swab to clean the roller bearing track. It fixed the timing completely. Has anyone else had to go against the grain on a classic repair like that?

Ever feel like the repair rules are just there to make us feel brave when we break them? That little bit of naphtha probably saved a huge headache and a big bill. Sometimes you just have to trust your hands, right?

Right? My hands have a better track record than my brain half the time. I followed the manual once and bricked a whole motherboard. Now I just wing it with a hair dryer and hope. The rules are more like gentle suggestions after you've shocked yourself on the same capacitor twice.
