Rigged a dust separator after my vacuum choked on oak sawdust

Used a five-gallon bucket and some PVC, now it runs smooth.

Used oak?

My buddy Mark grabbed some reclaimed oak for a floating shelf last year. The boards looked fine until he started cutting. Found three old nail holes filled with dirt, and the grain was way more brittle than new wood. He spent hours sanding out these dark stain patches that wouldn't budge. Ended up with a wobbly shelf and a lot of cussing.

Did he check the wood with a metal detector first? I learned that the hard way too. Old nails can be hidden under the surface and will ruin your blade. For dark stains, sometimes you need a wood bleach or oxalic acid, not just sanding. A good trick is to test a small spot on the back with different cleaners before you commit to the whole board.
