Appreciation post: the old guy at my lumber yard in Tulsa who marks the good face on every board for me
I build face frame cabinets out of a small garage setup in Tulsa and I buy most of my poplar and maple from a yard off 11th. There's a guy named Duane there, been at that counter since I was a kid, and about a month ago he started chalking an X on the show face of every board before it goes on the racks. I never asked him to do it, he just saw me digging through a bunk one Saturday and said I was wasting good stock turning the wrong side out. Cut my waste down to almost nothing on a 40 board run last week. Any of you got a yard guy like that, or do you just sort it yourself at the truck?
How did you get so lucky with Duane? My yard guys just wave me toward the stacks and go back to their coffee, so I end up flipping every board myself and it eats half my Saturday. That chalk X thing is such a small move but I bet it saves you hours, wish more folks at the counter cared like that.
