That $300 "guaranteed" friend loan I'll never see again

Lent my buddy Mark $300 back in March to help him cover his rent after he swore he'd pay me back in two weeks. He quit answering texts by week three and I found out from his sister he moved to Phoenix without telling anyone. Anyone else get burned by an "emergency" loan that you knew was a bad idea from the start?

That $300 'guaranteed' friend loan" - man, that phrase hits hard because there's no such thing as a guaranteed loan between friends. The minute you hand over cash to a buddy, you're really just giving a gift with extra steps and hope attached. I've learned the hard way that if you can't afford to lose the money entirely, you shouldn't lend it at all. It sucks when someone you trusted just disappears like that, but at least you found out who he really was for only three hundred bucks instead of a lot more. Have you heard anything from his sister since then about where he went?

Nah, I never heard from his sister after that. But funny enough, this exact thing happened to a buddy of mine a few years back. He loaned a coworker $200 for what was supposed to be a week, and the guy just vanished from work too. My friend actually ran into him at a gas station six months later and the guy tried to act like nothing happened. No mention of the money, just a quick nod and he was gone. So yeah, you're probably right that it's more of a gift than a loan, and three hundred is a rough but cheap lesson compared to what some people lose. @olivia_bailey, it still stings though, no matter the amount.
