That $15 stencil set turned my monthly spread into a total mess
I spent $15 on a pack of stencils off Amazon thinking they'd make my headers look clean. First try, the paint bled under the edge and ruined my whole August layout. Second attempt with a different pen just smeared everywhere. Now I'm back to freehanding letters and it looks way better. Anyone else waste money on fancy tools that just made things worse?

Huh, I actually had the opposite experience. Those cheap stencils work fine for me as long as I use a stiff brush and barely any paint on it. You might have just gotten a bad batch or used the wrong type of pen.

Oh man, I feel you on this one lol. I actually had the same exact problem with those cheap stencils, they were useless until I switched to a sponge applicator with almost no paint. Like barely even damp, just a tiny tap on the paint and then dab it on. It took some trial and error but once I figured out that super dry sponge trick, they worked way better for me. Still not as good as the pricier ones, but for the cost you can't really complain once you know the trick.

Wait, hold on. A sponge? You used a SPONGE with those cheap stencils? I mean, maybe it's just me but my brain can't even picture that working. Every time I tried the sponge method I just ended up with paint bleeding all under the stencil and ruining the whole project. It was such a mess. I would have never in a million years thought to use a dry sponge, like barely any paint at all. That's wild to me that it actually worked out for you. Seems like the exact opposite of what you'd want to do with those flimsy plastic stencils.
