My coworker Janet made me rethink my whole bujo system

So last week during lunch, my coworker Janet saw me setting up my weekly spread and asked why I spend so much time on the decorations. I told her it helps me stay motivated, but she pointed out that I was drawing little weather icons for days that hadn't happened yet. She said I was basically doing arts and crafts instead of actually tracking anything useful. At first I got defensive, but then I looked back at my journal from March and realized I never once checked my habit tracker or used those fancy collections I made. She uses a super simple system with just a monthly log and daily rapid logging, and she's been consistent for 3 years. It kind of hit me that maybe I've been more focused on making it look good than making it work. Has anyone else had to totally strip down their system after realizing you were just decorating instead of journaling?

Ditched the washi tape and sticker collection about six months back for the same reason. Started keeping just a single notebook page per month for appointments and a running list of tasks I actually did, not the ones I planned. One thing that helped was using a $0.50 composition notebook instead of a fancy one, made it feel less precious and more like a tool. The weather icons thing got me too, used to draw little clouds and suns for days I hadn't lived through yet, total waste of time looking back.

Read somewhere that simple systems actually stick better long term.
