Vent: My experience with permit inspections this month
I just dealt with the city's permit office for a simple deck addition. The inspector arrived two hours late without calling. He spent five minutes looking at the posts and left. Now I have to wait another week for a re-inspection because of a paperwork error on their end. This happens every time I pull a permit. It feels like the system is designed to delay projects, not ensure safety. I'm starting to think they do it on purpose.

Consider how underfunded these departments usually are lol. The delays and mistakes feel personal, but it's more likely they're just totally swamped with no help. That pressure turns their job into box-checking, which helps nobody.

Ever notice how the same underfunding mess happens everywhere? I waited eight months for a simple permit because their whole office had two people handling a thousand cases! You can feel them rushing just to get stuff off their desk, which means mistakes pile up. It totally turns into that box checking job you mentioned, where speed beats doing it right. So frustrating because a broken system just hurts everyone in the end.

Honestly my own impatience is probably why I'd be terrible at one of those jobs. I'd rush through stuff just like @willowa20 said and then have to fix my own mess all day, which sounds like the worst loop ever. You're totally right that the pressure just makes it a speed game, not a quality one. It's a dumb cycle because rushing causes errors, and fixing errors takes more time they don't have. So we all just end up waiting even longer for messed up paperwork.
