That day I stopped paying for a pricey gym membership to workout at home

I was dropping $75 a month at a chain gym in Phoenix and barely going twice a week. Everyone told me you need a real gym with machines to get fit, but I called BS and canceled. I spent $150 on a used squat rack and some plates from Facebook Marketplace, which paid for itself in 2 months. Now I do full workouts in my garage and save the drive time plus gas money. My progress has been the same as when I was at the gym, maybe even better since I'm actually consistent. Has anyone else made the switch and found home setups work better than the big box places?

Funny you mention the gas savings - I figured out my old gym was costing me about 30 bucks a month just in driving there and back. The real win with home workouts is how much easier it is to stay consistent when you don't have a 20 minute commute to dread.

Respectfully gotta disagree with ya here. Some people do fine with a squat rack in the garage but not everyone has the space or the right kind of house. My buddy set up a home gym in his apartment and the whole building complained about the noise from the plates hitting the floor. Plus he was stuck doing the same three exercises every day because he couldn't fit more gear. There's something to be said for having access to different machines and cables that target muscles in ways a barbell just can't do. And for people who need that separation between home and workout time, having your gym in the same place you sleep can actually kill motivation.
