That $5,000 number I hit without even planning for it

I was just checking my savings account last week and saw I crossed $5,000 in my emergency fund. I never set that as a goal, it just happened from me putting away $50 to $100 every month for the last 3 years. It hit me that I didn't even feel the pinch, I just got used to the habit of moving money right after payday. The wild part is I started this when I was bringing home $2,800 a month and barely making rent. Has anyone else hit a milestone that snuck up on them like that?

That's exactly what it felt like for me, @cameron538. I had a similar thing happen with my car fund. I just put away a little bit each week from my side jobs, nothing fancy, just $25 or $50 when I could. After about four years I looked at the balance and it was over $6,000. I didn't even realize it was that high because I never checked it. It really does show that small, consistent habits add up faster than you think when you just stick with it.

Doesn't it feel good when good habits pay off without you even watching?
