A hostel owner in Lisbon cut my pack weight by 4 pounds with one question
She asked why I was carrying 3 pairs of jeans, and honestly I had no answer, so I mailed 5 pounds of stuff home for 22 euros. Now I pack by asking "would I wear this twice in a row?" and it works, anyone else use a rule like that?
Packing light is fine and all, but the way people talk about it you'd think carrying a few extra pounds is a life or death situation. It's not. You mailed home jeans you weren't wearing, cool, but 22 euros to save 5 pounds is not some big breakthrough. Most people overpack on their first trip and then figure it out. That's just normal. The rule about wearing something twice in a row works for a weekend trip, but on a two week trip in mixed weather you're gonna want options. Do whatever works for you, just don't act like a hostel owner solved some huge puzzle.
