Serious question, has anyone else lost money on those 'budget' meal kits?

I signed up for one last month that promised meals for $5 a serving, but after the shipping fee and the hidden 'small order' charge, my first box cost me $68 for three dinners. I canceled right away but they still charged me for the next week before it processed. How do you actually find a meal plan that saves cash instead of costing more?
