TIL you can make a huge batch of refried beans for about $3
I was choosing between buying the canned stuff or starting from dry pinto beans, and the dry ones won by a mile after a 2 hour simmer. Anyone have other cheap bean recipes that freeze well?

Have you tried adding a little fat when you mash them? The canned stuff usually has lard or oil, and that's what makes it taste right. @terry_thomas is spot on about black bean soup, I freeze it in single portions for lunches. For pintos, I'll cook a whole bag with onion and garlic, then mash half for refried and leave the rest whole for chili or burrito bowls.

Wait, two hours? I just throw my beans in the slow cooker overnight and forget about them. @terry_thomas has the right idea with black bean soup, that stuff is a lifesaver.
