Just realized my $4 rotisserie chicken habit is actually cheaper than my meal prep Sundays
Three weeks ago my sister came over and watched me spend two hours and about $28 on ingredients for a week of chicken and rice bowls, and she just looked at the grocery receipt and laughed at me. I did the math that night and figured out one of those store rotisserie chickens for $4.99 gives me four lunches if I stretch it with tortillas and a bag of frozen veggies, which comes out to around $2 a meal instead of $4.50. For two weeks now I have been buying two chickens on Sunday, pulling the meat myself, and it takes maybe 15 minutes total. My grocery bill dropped from $95 to $61 without me really trying. I still miss having different flavors every day though. Does anyone have a cheap way to change up the taste of rotisserie chicken so it does not feel like the same meal four days straight?
The $61 vs $95 drop is real and hard to argue with, so the flavor thing is the only problem worth solving here. What are you doing with the chicken once you pull it, just cold out of the container onto a tortilla? That matters a lot, because a plain shredded chicken tastes way different than one you toss in something hot for two minutes. The other question is whether you are stuck on two chickens a week or would try one chicken plus one cheap protein, like a pound of ground turkey or a bag of frozen shrimp, just to break the streak. And when you say you miss different flavors every day, is it the seasoning you miss or the whole format, like a bowl versus a wrap versus a salad? That answer changes what I would tell you to do.
