Why does nobody talk about the $12 laser level beating my $80 one on tile jobs?

I picked up a cheapo laser level at Harbor Freight in Mesa last month just to have a backup, and it held a line way better on a bathroom floor than the name brand one I paid 80 bucks for two years ago. The beam on the expensive one is thicker and harder to read across 12 feet of tile, which I did not expect. Anyone else find a cheap tool that flat out works better than the pricey version?
