Spent $135 on groceries last week, spent $62 this week eating better. Am I crazy or is this just luck?
Last week I hit the store without a plan and dropped $135 on stuff that mostly sat in the fridge, some of it went bad by Friday. This week I wrote down 5 meals, checked what was already in my pantry, and went to the same store in Katy with a hard $60 cap and a calculator on my phone. I walked out at $62 and we ate better, actual dinners with leftovers, not frozen junk. Now I'm stuck on whether that $73 gap is a real skill I just picked up or if I'll be back to $135 next week. Part of me thinks meal planning works and part of me thinks sales just lined up lucky, so which one is it?
Wait, you wrote down 5 meals and checked your pantry first? That's the part that's blowing my mind here. Most people I know just walk in and grab whatever looks good, myself included, and that's exactly how you end up with $135 of stuff rotting by Friday (been there way too many times). The pantry check is huge because half the battle is not buying the third jar of cumin you already have sitting at home. And a hard cap with a calculator? That turns shopping into a game instead of a free for all. I don't buy the luck thing either, because sales don't save you $73 unless you already knew what you were cooking. Do it again next week and see if it holds.
