Rant: my 8 year old rice cooker died and the $18 replacement cooks better

I dragged my old rice cooker through 3 moves since college, it finally gave up last Tuesday after 8 years of weekly use. Honestly I was ready to drop $60 on a fancy one with all these settings I'd never touch. Then I grabbed a basic $18 model at the Asian market in Fresno on a whim, just to hold me over. The difference is wild, it makes fluffier rice in 22 minutes and the inner pot actually cleans easier. My old one was a name brand too, so this cheap thing beating it has me questioning everything. Has anyone else had a budget version outperform something you'd owned for years? I'm almost mad about the money I wasted back then.

Man, that tracks. I had the same thing happen with a $25 one from H-Mart after my old Zojirushi started peeling. The cheap one has a simpler switch, less to break, and honestly the rice comes out just as good. @martin.paige is right about the preset buttons, I never used half of them anyway. Only thing I’d say is wash the inner pot by hand, even if it says dishwasher safe, that’s what killed my last one.

That price gap makes you wonder where the money actually goes with those fancy ones. Maybe they charge more for all those preset buttons for different grains when really the basic heating element does the job. Your experience lines up with what a friend told me about Korean market rice cookers, they keep it simple and the rice comes out perfect every time. It also sounds like the newer cheaper ones have caught up on nonstick tech so the pot cleans up way easier. Kinda makes me want to replace my own midrange one before it dies just to test the theory.
