I tracked every dollar I spent on groceries for 90 days and the before/after at day 45 made me mad
So back in January I started writing down every single grocery purchase in a little notebook, mostly because my wife said we were bleeding money and I didn't believe her. First 45 days, our average was $212 a week for two people plus a toddler, and I honestly thought that was just what food costs now. Then I got laid off for 3 weeks in February and had to get real about it, so I switched from the big Kroger run to a Tuesday trip to the Aldi on Lorain Ave plus a Saturday stop at the West Side Market for produce. The change was stupid fast, by week 7 we were down to $128 a week and eating basically the same meals. The thing that killed me was seeing it written down, because I was buying the same 30 things every time but paying 60% more for the name brands and the little impulse stuff near the register. Day 45 versus day 90 is a $336 a month gap and I keep thinking about how long I did that without noticing. I know times are tight for everybody but I'm curious, has anyone else done the notebook thing and found a specific week where it just clicked for them?
Doing the same 30 items over and over is what gets you. Once you know your list by heart you stop browsing and just grab and go, that's where the savings live. Aldi plus the market is a solid combo too, produce there is way cheaper than Kroger even if you gotta deal with the crowd.
