Guy at a garage sale in Reno wanted $40 for a $15 socket set and acted like I was robbing him
Watched this guy pull a rusty 3/8 drive set out of a cardboard box and slap a $40 sticker on it, saying it was "vintage." I pointed out the same set goes for $15 at the pawn shop on Virginia St, and he got real quiet and told me to make an offer. I walked because the ratchet was seized up anyway, but it stuck with me how many sellers think "old" means "valuable." Do you all just walk away from these or try to talk them down?
That bit about "vintage" being slapped on anything rusty made me laugh because a buddy of mine ran into the exact same thing at an estate sale out in Sparks. He spotted a hand plane on a table marked $65, and the seller kept going on about how it was from the 40s like that was supposed to mean something. My friend flipped it over and showed him the plastic handle and the made in China stamp right there on the blade. The guy just shrugged and said "well, make me an offer then." Same move as your Reno guy, trying to save face after getting caught. My friend offered five bucks and walked when the guy acted insulted, and honestly that seems like the right call.
