The "I'm a neat person" lie at open houses drives me nuts

I went to an open house last Sunday in a neighborhood I'm kind of scoping out, and the owner had this little sign on the fridge that said "Pardon our mess, we're real people." But their mess was literally three throw pillows slightly out of place and a single coffee mug by the sink. Meanwhile I run a moving company and I've walked into houses where the job took an extra 2 hours because we had to dig through actual hoarder levels of junk just to reach the couch. If you want brutal honesty, just say you live like a normal human being with dishes and laundry instead of pretending a stray sock is some shocking flaw. The whole "we're so real" thing feels more fake than a staged house. Has anyone else noticed this trend where people flex how messy they are but it's still basically spotless?

Put notes on the fridge about what was actually cluttered.

Notes on a fridge just remind you what you already know you ignored.

So what's the difference between a note you ignore and one that actually makes you do the thing? Is it how it's written, or just where it's at?
