That $80 'professional' knife sharpener I bought off Instagram turned out to be a glorified paperweight that left my chef's knife with a worse edge than when I started.

After three tries following their video tutorials, I took the thing apart and found the grinding wheels were basically plastic with sand glued on, and now I'm stuck paying a local shop $15 to fix the damage, has anyone else fallen for one of those gadget ads?

...and that's exactly why I don't buy kitchen tools off social media anymore, lol. I had a similar thing happen with one of those electric knife sharpeners on Amazon. It claimed to be "professional grade" but the second I ran my good Wusthof through it, the edge literally got jagged. Turns out the abrasive wheel was just a cheap ceramic disc that chipped after like two uses. I was so mad I ended up buying a cheap manual sharpening stone on a whim from a hardware store for like $12, and somehow that works better than any of those overpriced gadgets. Now I just use that stone and a leather strop I made from an old belt, and my knives actually hold an edge for weeks. Instagram ads are just scams for people who don't know better, and I learned that the hard way too.

Hold up, you made a strop out of an old belt? That's actually genius. I never thought of that, and here I am getting ripped off by Instagram ads like a sucker. Your $12 stone probably works better than half the stuff sold on there. I paid some guy on YouTube a few weeks ago for a digital download on knife sharpening and it was literally just a free PDF he found online.
