Walked out of a live show because nobody clapped between movements
Saw a string quartet at a small venue in Portland last month, and I was the only one clapping after the first movement. Got dirty looks, but honestly the silence felt fake and stiff. Has anyone else ditched an event because the unspoken rules felt more staged than the performance?
Classical concerts have kept that rule for a reason, and it's not about being stiff or fake. The silence lets the last note hang in the air before people start clapping, which keeps the flow of the piece intact. Walking out over that seems like a lot, since the music is the point, not the crowd's reaction.
