Serious question about people who bring whole meals onto public transit
Last Tuesday on the 7:15 bus downtown, a woman sat next to me with a big container of spaghetti and meatballs. She just started eating it right there, sauce dripping everywhere. I wanted to say something but I kept quiet. Has anyone else run into this, and how do you handle it without causing a scene?

Ask her straight up if she'd be cool with you eating a tuna fish sandwich on her couch. What's the difference between a bus seat and a dining table anyway?

Well Jenny, I have to say I'm a little shocked you'd even compare a bus seat to a dining table. A bus seat is public property, and people eat all sorts of things on them every day without asking anyone's permission. But a dining table is someone's personal furniture in their own home, and it's a whole different story. I think asking her about the tuna sandwich on the couch is actually a pretty good test, because it shows exactly where her boundaries are with food and her space. Most people would say no to that, and honestly that's fair.
